Duration: 6 days
Period: From April to October
Level: Easy to medium
Highest point: Jebel M’GOUN 4,071m
Accommodation: Gîte and camping
Day 1: Marrakech – Tabant
Included: Private Transport (5 hrs), Dinner
Elevation gain: 400m; Walk 2-3 hrs
We drive from Marrakech towards Azilal. After arriving at the pretty plateau of Tabant, we start our first two-hour walk towards our camp at Azib n’Ikis. Today’s walk takes us along the Assif n’ Arous Valley (1,825 meters), and the steady climb takes us through a canyon of golden rock walls on both sides. This evening’s camp is at Ighil n’ Ikkis where an old shepherd’s lodge, known as Azib Ikkis (2,234 meters), offers the perfect mini plateau for camping and gives impressive views of the Igoudame peak (3,519 meters) that lights up at sunset.
Day 2: Azib Tarkeddid Refuge
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Gain 1200m; Loss 500m; Walk 5-7 hrs
Today you won’t have to set off too early, but after breakfast you will start your day trek that takes you up to Aghouri Pass where switchback paths bring you sheadily to above 3000m. As the air cools, the wind may pick up, so it’s good to put various layers in your backpack. As you approach the Aghouri summit (3565 meters), you can enjoy a view of the roundish peak of Jbel Mgoun (Oumsoud) looming in the distance with spots of snow along its spine all year round. After enjoying a panoramic view and refreshing, you will walk down steadily along the path to Tarkeddid (known as Tilibit n’ Tarkeddid that sits at 2900 meters). Spend the night at M’GOUN base camp!
Day 3 – Summit Jbel Mgoun / Oulilimt
Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Elevation gain of 1,200m initially then loss 500m; Walk 5-7 hrs
Today we set out to tackle Morocco’s second-highest peak, Jbel Mgoun (4,068 meters). It’s a long and tiring day, but a rewarding one as we make our way along the top ridge which offers an amazing panoramic vista as far as the eye can see. We pass through the area’s moon-like terrain made up of rocks, scree, and snow that is the trademark of Mgoun’s higher landscape. Eventually, the mountain’s round peak comes into sight and the last part of the trek brings more zigzag until we reach the top. The descent takes us into a caldera where we then head east along a riverbed and up along a ridge giving impressive views of the Tinoughrin range as we make our way to the Oulilimt river valley to camp at 2600 meters.
Day 4: Oulilimt – Ain Aflafal
Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Elevation loss: 370m; Walk 5-7 hrs
A more leisurely day than yesterday. Descend along Oulilimt river valley, which may have a flowing stream until July if the previous year brought enough snow. We make our way along the valley, crisscrossing and zigzagging with the river. The day’s end brings us to an abandoned refuge that is now a nomadic hut that once housed an impressive well used by the nomadic shepherds and their families. We walk past this around a bend that opens up to a grassy embankment where we camp for the night.
Day 5: Tighremt n’Ait Ahmed – Tabant
Elevation gain of 670m initially then loss of 1,055m; Walk 5 hrs
Today we make our way from Ain Aflafal to Tighremt n’Ait Ahmed where we cross the Oulilimt River and head north to Tizi n’Ait Imi pass (2,906m). We walk through Azib Tifratine and make an approach up the Tizi n’Ait Imi, which offers stunning views of the entire M’goun region and into the Ait Bougmez Valley. We descend from here to Tabant where we relax in a local guest house tonight before heading back to Marrakech tomorrow.
